My name is Sophie. I am twenty-one years old, I live in a rather grand hotel on the Cornish coast, and I spend most of my days wearing a pretty black satin maid's uniform, white lace apron, stockings and high heels.

I make beds, polish silver, clean bathrooms, serve drinks and attend to the personal needs of a rather formidable Scottish woman whom I address as Mistress at all times. I have been taught how to apply my makeup, how to walk gracefully in heels, how to curtsey and how to remain quiet when somebody is telling me what to do.

I am expected to look attractive while doing all these things, which is considerably harder than it sounds.

None of this would be particularly remarkable if I had always been a girl with ambitions to become a domestic servant. Unfortunately, until quite recently, I was a fairly ordinary young man from London who couldn't find a job.

I had never worn a maid's uniform, had no experience of domestic service and certainly hadn't imagined spending my mornings carefully applying lipstick before going downstairs to clean rooms or serve breakfast.

And yet here I am.

Mistress McFadden says I have the makings of an excellent maid, although she also says I have a great deal to learn. I suspect her definition of perfection is rather more demanding than most people's.

Perhaps I should explain how all this happened.

Live-In Trainee Sissy Maid Wanted

Six months after leaving university, my life was going nowhere. I lived in a small flat in South London, shared with two other people, and was rapidly running out of money.

I had applied for dozens of jobs, attended interviews and rewritten my CV more times than I care to remember. Nothing came of it. Even my flatmate, who worked in recruitment, was beginning to lose patience with me.

Eventually, I started looking for work that included accommodation. Hotel jobs, housekeeping, kitchen work, anything that would give me somewhere to live and a chance to get myself sorted out.

That was when I came across an unusual advert.

The Winter Tide Hotel, an exclusive private establishment on the Cornish coast, was looking for a live-in trainee sissy maid.

I laughed when I first read it.

The position involved full feminisation, domestic service, personal grooming, strict discipline and a willingness to obey instructions without argument. The successful applicant would receive accommodation, food and training, with the possibility of a longer contract and a share of hotel profits if suitable.

I should probably have closed my laptop and forgotten about it.

Instead, I sent an application.

I still struggle to explain why. Desperation played a large part, certainly, but there was also a curiosity I didn't particularly want to examine too closely.

A few days later, I found myself being interviewed by Miss Fiona McFadden, the hotel's owner. She was an attractive, immaculately dressed Scottish woman who spoke with the confidence of somebody who had never needed to ask anyone's permission for anything.

She studied me rather more closely than any previous employer had done.

My face, my hair, my build and even the way I sat in front of the computer seemed to interest her.

She asked whether I understood what full feminisation involved and whether I was prepared to submit to a structured training programme.

I said I was.

Looking back, I don't think I had the faintest idea what I was agreeing to.

Arrival at the Winter Tide Hotel

The Winter Tide stands on a headland overlooking the Cornish coast. It is a magnificent old building, surrounded by gardens and exposed to weather that seems determined to blow the place into the Atlantic.

When I arrived, I was exhausted from travelling and more than a little frightened. I was shown to a small attic bedroom containing a narrow bed, a dressing table, a mirror and a wardrobe.

The wardrobe was the first serious indication that my life was about to change. Inside were dresses, satin maid's uniforms, stockings, lingerie and other feminine garments that had apparently been selected with me in mind.

I met Emma, one of the hotel's maids, who had been given responsibility for helping with my training. She was petite, pretty and completely at ease in her immaculate black satin uniform.

I couldn't imagine looking anything like her.

Emma was friendly, although she made it perfectly clear that the rules of the hotel were not optional. I would be expected to rise early, keep myself immaculately groomed, work hard and address the senior staff correctly.

Above all, I was to accept that becoming a maid was not a game.

I spent that first evening wondering whether I had made the biggest mistake of my life.

By the following evening, I was wearing a satin negligee and answering to the name Sophie.

It had been quite a day.

The Day I Became Sissy Maid Sophie

My transformation began in the hotel's private salon, hidden away beneath the main building.

Miss Gilbert, the beautician responsible for my appearance, was a terrifyingly efficient woman who seemed to regard my existing masculinity as a problem requiring immediate attention.

She examined my face, hair, hands and body before beginning what became several hours of treatments.

First came the removal of my body hair. I had never appreciated how much of it I possessed until somebody decided to remove virtually all of it.

The experience was uncomfortable, embarrassing and occasionally painful. However, when I touched my newly smooth legs afterwards, I was astonished by how different they felt.

My eyebrows were reshaped into a more feminine arch. My face received carefully placed fillers to soften my features, my lips became fuller, and my hair was coloured and styled into a pretty, feminine shape.

Miss Gilbert also pierced my ears, fitted delicate earrings and gave me a manicure.

I remember looking down at my pale pink nails and wondering how I was ever going to manage ordinary things with them.

Then there was the matter of the chastity device, which Mistress had included in my training requirements. I won't go into the details, except to say that it became a constant reminder that my circumstances had changed rather more dramatically than my appearance.

Finally, Miss Gilbert turned my chair towards the mirror.

For a few seconds, I couldn't speak.

The person looking back at me had soft features, shapely eyebrows, full lips and carefully styled hair. My newly pierced ears caught the light, and the delicate colour on my nails seemed perfectly suited to the face in the mirror.

She was pretty.

That was what shocked me most. I had expected to look like a young man wearing makeup, perhaps an unconvincing imitation of femininity.

Instead, I was looking at a girl.

Miss Gilbert seemed quite satisfied with her work, although she made it clear that my appearance was only the beginning.

Now, I would now have to learn to behave like the girl she had created.

My First Maid's Uniform

I think putting on my first maid's uniform was the moment when my transformation became real.

Emma arrived at the salon carrying an extraordinary collection of garments. There were satin panties, a corset, stockings, garters, a lace underskirt and a beautiful black satin maid's dress with white sleeves and a matching apron.

Everything had been chosen to create a particular appearance.

The corset drew in my waist and encouraged me to stand upright. The stockings felt wonderfully smooth against my newly hairless legs, while the lace underskirt gave the dress a fullness I had never experienced before.

Once the dress was fastened and the apron tied around my waist, Emma helped me into a pair of high heels. I nearly fell over. Apparently, there is quite a difference between admiring a pair of heels and actually walking in them.

Emma steadied me, adjusted my uniform and made me stand in front of the mirror.

I could barely believe what I was seeing. The girl looking back at me wore a fitted satin dress, a pretty white apron and stockings that made her legs look considerably more attractive than I ever thought they could be.

My waist looked narrower, my posture was straighter, and the little skirt moved around my thighs whenever I shifted my weight.

I was fascinated and horribly embarrassed at the same time. Then Miss Gilbert informed me that I would be known as Sophie.

I repeated the name quietly. Sophie. It sounded strange, but not nearly as ridiculous as I had expected.

And when Emma smiled and told me how pretty I looked, I felt an unexpected little thrill of pleasure.

I was beginning to understand that femininity was not simply something you wore. It was something you felt.

Learning How to Become a Proper Maid

Being transformed into a pretty girl was one thing. Learning to work as a maid was something else entirely.

Emma began teaching me the basics almost immediately. I had to learn how to stand correctly, how to walk with smaller steps, how to keep my hands in a graceful position and how to curtsey whenever the occasion demanded it.

The curtsey was particularly difficult.

I thought it would be a simple matter of bending my knees and lowering my head. Unfortunately, doing that while wearing high heels, a corset and a rather short skirt requires considerably more coordination than I possessed.

Emma demonstrated and I tried to copy her, wobbled, lost my balance and nearly ended up on the floor.

We practised again. And again.

Eventually, I managed something that resembled a proper curtsey, although I wouldn't describe it as elegant.

Then came the actual housework.

At the Winter Tide, making a bed means more than straightening the duvet and plumping up the pillows. Everything must be perfectly positioned, the linen immaculate and the room prepared according to the hotel's exacting standards.

Bathrooms must be spotless, towels correctly folded, complimentary items neatly arranged and every surface checked.

I discovered dust in places I hadn't even known existed.

Perhaps the strangest part was doing these ordinary domestic tasks while wearing such extraordinary clothes. My corset made bending more difficult. My heels caused my calves to ache, and my carefully manicured nails seemed determined to catch on everything.

Emma would remind me to smooth my skirt before crouching, keep my movements graceful and avoid revealing more of my underwear than was strictly necessary.

Then one afternoon, while cleaning a bathroom, I caught sight of myself in the mirror. I was wearing my uniform, concentrating on polishing the basin, and moving with a surprising degree of feminine grace.

I hadn't been thinking about my posture or the way I held my hands.

I was simply working.

It was the first time I realised that Sophie's movements were beginning to become natural.

What Mistress McFadden Taught Me About Obedience

Of course, the Winter Tide is not an ordinary hotel, and Mistress McFadden is certainly not an ordinary employer. She expects her maids to be perfectly groomed, efficient, discreet and obedient.

When she returned to the hotel and saw me in my uniform for the first time, I was terrified. Emma had carefully repaired my makeup, straightened my apron and reminded me of the correct way to address her.

When Mistress appeared in the entrance hall, I curtseyed alongside Emma. I remember how she examined me, taking in everything from my hair and makeup to the position of my hands and the way my dress fitted.

She asked whether I was now Sophie.

I answered, "Yes, Mistress."

For some reason, hearing myself say those words made my face burn.

Over the following days, I began learning how to attend to Mistress personally. Emma showed me how to prepare her bath, arrange her clothes, serve her drinks and anticipate what she might need before being asked.

I also had to learn to listen properly.

This was rather more difficult than I had expected. I had always been the sort of person who answered quickly, made jokes when embarrassed and occasionally argued simply because I didn't like being told what to do.

Mistress had very little patience with any of those habits.

She expected me to pay attention, accept correction and perform my duties without unnecessary fuss.

She also instructed me to keep a journal recording my progress and gave me a feminine training audio to listen to in my room.

Initially, I thought this was all rather excessive.

But gradually, I began to appreciate something that unsettled me.

I wanted her approval.

When she corrected me, I felt embarrassed and sometimes resentful. When she praised me, however briefly, I experienced an extraordinary sense of satisfaction.

I began making more effort, not simply because I had been ordered to, but because I wanted her to be pleased with me.

That was something Colin Mercer would have found very difficult to understand.

Becoming Feminine Even When Nobody Was Watching

Perhaps the most surprising part of my transformation was what happened when I was alone. During my first day, I was intensely conscious of everything feminine about me. The stockings, the makeup, the corset and the uniform all seemed strange. I had to remind myself constantly to sit properly, walk carefully and respond to my new name.

But after a while, certain things began to happen automatically.

I would smooth my skirt before sitting without thinking about it. I learned to apply my own moisturiser and daytime makeup, and I gradually became quicker at dressing myself.

My voice began to soften, particularly when addressing Emma or Mistress.

Even the way I slept changed. Instead of my old T-shirt and boxer shorts, I wore a beautiful red silk negligee with a matching peignoir. The first morning I woke wearing it, I was astonished by how natural the soft fabric felt against my skin.

My body also seemed to be changing. I noticed a slight fullness and tenderness in my chest following Miss Gilbert's treatments, subtle differences that made the feminine clothing feel even more appropriate.

I spent far too much time looking at myself in the mirror. Sometimes I was frightened by what I saw. At other times, I felt an almost irresistible pleasure in discovering how pretty I could be.

What troubled me most was that I had stopped thinking of Sophie as simply a name the hotel had given me.

She was becoming part of the way I understood myself.

What Becoming a Maid Has Done to Me

When I look back, I was an unemployed graduate who spent most of my days worrying about money, avoiding difficult conversations and wondering what I was supposed to do with my life.

Sophie has responsibilities. She knows how to make a bed properly, prepare a room for guests, polish silver, serve drinks and assist her Mistress.

She can apply her own makeup, put on her stockings without laddering them and walk through the hotel in high heels without constantly looking at her feet.

Her curtsey is improving, too, but the changes go much deeper than that.

I have become more aware of my appearance, my movements and the effect I have on other people. I enjoy being pretty. I like the feeling of a carefully fitted dress, the delicate scent of perfume and the little pleasure of seeing my manicured nails resting against the satin of my uniform.

I like being addressed as Sophie. And, most surprising of all, I have discovered that I enjoy being useful. There is a quiet satisfaction in preparing a room perfectly, anticipating somebody's needs or completing a difficult task without having to be reminded.

I never imagined that polishing silver could make me feel proud of myself.

Yet somehow, it does.

There is still a great deal about my circumstances that frightens me. Mistress can be extraordinarily demanding, and I am not entirely sure what the hotel has planned for me.

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I simply packed my bags and returned to London.

Then I look at the dresses hanging in my wardrobe, the cosmetics arranged on my dressing table and the girl looking back at me in the mirror.

And I wonder whether I could ever really go back.
